How Many Plants
To Order
The chart is an approximation of the number of plants to buy for your containers and garden areas.
Plants in containers is part art and part science when it comes to knowing the number of
plants to put in a flowerbox. Here at Mischel's Greenhouses, Ltd. we like to plant our flowerpots and let them grow together in the pot, finishing off in a few weeks. This ensures adequate soil and room for the roots to grow without crowding. In general plants are planted closer together in containers than in garden beds because the plants will "spill over" the container.
In
areas of the country that have a growing season longer than the three months we experience here in Michigan, you may want to put in less plants, as they will continue to grow longer. If you are looking for instant flowerboxes you may want to increase the number of plants but beware of overcrowding later. [Though we have talked to many who like
that look]
In the garden area chart our planting guide is for all plants spaced at 12-inch intervals. These numbers again are based on letting the plants grow into the space for a few weeks. For longer growing seasons you may want to plant them a little further apart or if you want an instant garden area space the plants a little closer together. |
